I feel kinda mislead about the whole $199 thing.
Here in the UK, when you sign a contract with a mobile provider you get the phone for free. The so called "Line Rental" is usually the price of the phone spread out to monthly installments.

With the iPhone, not only do you have to commit to a lengthy contract with the most expensive UK mobile carrier, but you're also expected to shell out $199.

Is there a way to walk into a shop and just buy the iPhone? How much would that cost? Surely not $199? Right?

This must have been like when Comdex was at the height of its popularity - a Super Bowl for technophiles. Maybe I'll be able to pull it off one day.

@charbarred - not 100% about the UK deal, but i heard they were giving them away for free depending on what plan you sign up for -- any truth to that? don't think you can get one sans contract, but not sure.

@mark - yeah definitely worth it, especially if you can get a free press pass :)

Yeah, it seems you get a free one with an 18-month 45 pounds a month contract. For what you're getting that's about 10 pounds more than other contracts, meaning the iPhone will cost you 180 pounds. Not bad. They'll also be offering it sans contract so I'm waiting on the prices.
